What is an automotive driveshaft?

Jul 13, 2023

Transmission shaft, as the name suggests, is the shaft that transmits power. It is the transmission medium that transmits the power output from the engine to the drive wheels of the car after the transmission is slowed down and twisted. Without it, what can drive the wheels to turn? Wheels do not rotate, how can the car drive? Let's take a look at the role of the automobile drive shaft.

The drive shaft is the shaft that transmits power in the drive shaft of a universal drive. It is a rotating body with high speed and little support, so its dynamic balance is very important. Most driveshafts basically require a good dynamic balance test before they leave the factory and have been adjusted on a balancing machine. For cars with front engines and rear wheel drive, it is the shaft that transfers the operation of the transmission to the main reduction gear. It can have several sections and these can be connected by universal joints.

Automotive driveshafts consist of axle tubes, telescopic bushings and universal joints. The telescopic sleeve can automatically adjust the change of distance between the gearbox and the drive axle. The universal joint ensures the change of the angle between the output shaft of the gearbox and the input shaft of the drive axle, realizing the constant angular speed transmission of the two shafts. Most of the universal joints cross shafts, cross bearings and flange forks, etc.. The driveshaft universal joints used in the Tyrell series of heavy trucks use roller cross shaft bearings, and the short and thick cross shafts can transmit large torque. The end face of the bearing is fitted with butterfly springs to hold down the rollers. Reinforced nylon spacers with spiral grooves are added to the end face of the cross shaft to avoid burnout when transmitting power with large pinch angles or high torque.
